Backbarrow Ironworks, Cumbria

Backbarrow Ironworks history goes back as far as the early 18th century but now resides in the Cumbrian countryside as a relic of a more industrial era. Situated on the banks of the river Leven the grand structures of the former ironworks have laid dormant for many years. However, more recently the site has been a hive of activity. With the blessing of Historic England this majestic landmark has been the focus of an ambitious multi-million housing project. The resulting development will boast 43 desirable apartments plus five affordable houses sympathetically designed to complement their unique surroundings.

BRIEF

Steon have worked collaboratively with Pettit Singleton Associates and P. Wright Electrical Ltd to develop and deliver comprehensive lighting schemes for each of the three apartment blocks at the riverside location.

Steon supplied contemporary lighting solutions for each of the apartments as well as the communal areas throughout the development. The dwellings vary from one- and two-bedrooms apartments; to three- or four-bedroom triplex homes.

SOLUTION

Heavily featured throughout the development are Sol fire-rated downlights. Being so versatile whilst also benefitting from a minimalist design with a white bezel resulted in this downlight lending itself to many applications. In other areas our designers recognised that the sloped ceilings could cause issues with uniformity, to resolve this tiltable Java Solo and Bulleto LEDs were introduced to complement the rest of the installation. All of these products benefit from dedicated chip-on-board (COB) LED light sources, resultantly they will require very little maintenance with rated lifetimes in excess of 50,000 hours.

The stairwells utilised Orbit LEDs featuring snap-on décor trims to further enhance the aesthetics of the space. To ensure compliance with LG9 (Lighting for communal residential buildings) and BS5266-1 emergency regulations, the Orbit LEDs were complete with integral emergency back-up functionality to provide vital courtesy lighting should a power outage be incurred.

All luminaires supplied to Backbarrow Ironworks were specified with a correlated colour temperature of 3000K. This warm colour temperature is ideal for creating a relaxing and inviting ambiance for the residents and was adopted in all areas.

OUTCOME

The new lighting scheme at Backbarrow Ironworks has delivered on the brief and successfully created a contemporary and vibrant living environment for current and prospective residents.

Backbarrow Ironworks now benefits from a lighting installation with almost no maintenance demands. Whilst the LED light sources boast reliability, they are also highly efficient reducing the ongoing operational costs of the development as well as promoting sustainability.

TESTIMONIAL

“We were pleased to work with Rebecca, Steon’s Sales Engineer, on this project, who produced internal lighting design and calculations for circa 250 rooms ranging from stairs, hallways, bathrooms and showers, living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms. Rebecca spent many hours on this project design including redesigning quite a few areas due to architectural and client design development.

The majority of luminaires selected were fire rated and, overall, the luminaire costs were competitive, of pleasing appearance and have a 5-year guarantee. Samples of luminaires, technical information, photos and descriptions, were provided quite quickly when requested. Steon have quite a comprehensive selection of luminaires for most applications, and we have no hesitation in selecting them for future projects.”
