Chairman highlights strategic importance of diversity of thought in leadership

One of the UK's leading sources of information for the green economy and environmental issues, Business Green, has published an 'op-ed' knowledge article by Made in Britain's Chairman Professor Chris Harrop (pictured) on the importance of diversity of thought in ESG leadership.

In his article, Prof. Harrop says: "The success of some of the world’s most eminent business leaders – including Elon Musk, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, and Richard Branson with severe dyslexia — shows the ability and contribution of non-neurotypical individuals. Musk has described his hyper-focus and “obsession with truth” as characteristics that made his childhood difficult, but that have driven him to remarkable success in the business world. Branson, who dropped out of school at the age of 15 feeling a failure, today calls his dyslexia his “super power”.

"Made in Britain's 2023 Leader of the Year Maurizio Bragagni, whose visionary leadership of Tratos Group is pioneering sustainability in the cabling sector, also has dyslexia. This has not been an obstacle to business success or achieving a PhD."

Prof. Harrop continues why we need diversity of thought: "Diverse perspectives act as catalysts for innovation and creativity. When individuals with different cognitive styles come together, they bring with them unique ways of processing information and problem-solving.

"This is not just a moral question – it’s a strategic imperative. As we strive to build a more sustainable and equitable future, we must harness the transformative potential of diversity of thought to navigate the challenges we face in ESG and beyond.

"We need all the brainpower we’ve got. Let’s not waste any of it."
