Consumers waking up to Green Growth says Ammique

AMMIQUE® is a unique sleep, wellness and sustainability brand and a circular trailblazer on a mission to transform the current global take-make-waste linear bed/mattress industry into a circular and mattress-free sleep industry worldwide.

Designed and made in Britain, the Ammique bed is a sustainable, healthy, hygienic, and high-performance mattress-free sleep system that need never be replaced or ever go to landfill - ever. Adaptive in function and form, it is a total reinvention of the bed and addresses all the problems with the conventional bed/mattress combo.

Ammique beds can be cleaned and recleaned and used and reused repeatedly throughout their very long-life. Healthy and hygienic with 24/7 anti-microbial protection built-in, all padding is removable and washable at 60 degrees.

Built to the highest specifications using materials in the most sustainable way, Ammique beds are adaptive in form as well as in function. With interchangeable fixings and decorative panelling, they can be styled and restyled many times to suit personal tastes and changing trends as required over time.

Every Ammique part and product is tagged/ coded, and traceable, and every process is trackable. Ammique Ltd is a D2C vertically integrated company and takes full responsibility for all its products from design to delivery and around again throughout the supply chain.

The company has taken part in the Made in Britain Green Growth programme, and they scored particularly high in the Green Growth.  Marlene Greenhalgh, Managing Director (pictured), tell us more about their sustainability journey.

How is green growth a core part of the way you work/your business operates?

Our beds are designed and developed to be economically, ethically, and environmentally accountable, Ammique has envisioned a new supply chain model that can be replicated across the globe to meet its commitments of benefitting people, but more importantly, protecting the planet.

Waste levels in the UK are generally at an all-time high, with mattresses being a huge contributory factor. That is why we do what we do, to protect the planet, ditching the mattress to something more sustainable will be a huge help in tackling waste. The Ammique bed comes with an estimated functional life over 250 years to reduce mattress waste.

What aspects of green growth have you done well?

We try to infuse sustainability in everything we do. Our beds are a complete bed system with an outer frame and interchangeable decorative panels, all of which can be reused and repurposed. Waste is carefully managed throughout, as all packaging is removed after delivery and installation to be re-used or recycled. Also, over 90% of all plastic components are manufactured using reprocessed material, and in addition to this, all materials are sourced ethically and can be recycled, and all timber products are from renewable sources.

Have you delivered any specific initiatives within green growth?

We know that our current system of globalisation is broken and will destroy us and our planet unless we change it. We’ve put a lot of thought into the future at Ammique, looking at how we can manage our growth in the most economically, ethically, and ecologically sustainable way. By doing this, we can provide purposeful jobs and shared prosperity, and by reducing our exposure to costly supply chain disruptions and resource price volatility, our circular business model has resilience and profitability built in.

As we plan to scale, we look to take a phased approach which is proactive, practicable, flexible, and purposeful. Most importantly, we will always plan to continue to invest in the design, manufacture and supply of great products and services in the most economically, ecologically, and ethically viable way, as well as distributing products in the country where they are made enabling fair enterprises, creating well paid jobs, minimising waste and reducing carbon emissions.

What advice would you give to other members who want to do more in green growth/sustainability?

Given growing public support worldwide for strong sustainability, sufficiency, and sustainable consumption, it’s up to all of us to make better choices – personally, professionally and politically. Wherever you can, start by making small sustainable changes, and learn from there, it is not only needed by the planet, but increasingly wanted by the consumer.

Made in Britain’s Green Growth Assessment provides your business with a benchmark, so you can understand the progress your business is making in its sustainability journey. You can empower your business by joining the Made in Britain Green Growth programme. We’d love to talk to you.
