Nissan are a Japanese car manufacturer, with major facilities and sales networks worldwide. In 1986, the Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd (NMUK) plant in Sunderland officially opened. By February 1987, NMUK had become the sole supplier of the Bluebird model to the UK market. On average a new car has rolled off the line at the plant every two minutes, every hour of every day, for 37 years.
At the end of 2023 Ben Pennick from the Trim & Chassis Facilities Engineering department of NMUK Sunderland contacted Cottam regarding a custom brush to help with a pain point they had been dealing with for over a decade. They were facing issues with debris on their skillet conveyor, which their vehicles run along during manufacture. The debris building up was triggering the light guards causing the production line to stop which apart from its inconvenience was also costing the business thousands of pounds. They were looking to implement a fixed brush system in the pit (the underground of the skillet conveyor line where the skillets are moved from the end of line back to the start). They had a few buffer areas in the underground which they thought would be a good area to implement a system.
After conversations with the team at Nissan to fully understand their requirements, Cottam's inhouse design team designed bespoke systems to be installed on top and below the skillet to remove the debris whilst the skillet was still in use. The system was then manufactured at Cottam's factory in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear before being transported over to Nissan where it was installed by their inhouse team.
The system has now been installed for over a month and Cottam are thrilled to report there has been no stops to the assembly line due to debris since.
