Dernier & Hamlyn recently manufactured beautiful bespoke lighting for MY Marala, a private superyacht whose story began in 1931 as the vision of an English car and aircraft engine manufacturer.
While she was designed to be strong, her proportions are lithe and elegant. She provided a blueprint for Streamline Moderne, an international style of Art Deco architecture and design which emerged in the 1930 that emphasised curving forms, long horizontal lines, and often nautical elements.
Award-winning designer Muza Lab was commissioned to reinvigorate her 1930s spirit and preserve her aura for years to come by referencing her history and archive of stories that she could tell if only she could speak.
On the main deck areas Muza Lab’s team has created a space inspired by Gatsby-esque glamour that includes lounge areas with informal banquet seating that is used throughout the day and late into the evening.
This required lighting that would both add to the aesthetic ambitions of the dining area and be robust enough to cope with the outdoor conditions while floating the oceans.
Co-Founder of Muza Lab Nathan Hutchins approached bespoke lighting designers and manufacturers Dernier & Hamlyn, one of the few companies in the UK that produces lighting to the quality required for this exacting project.
Muza Lab provided Dernier & Hamlyn’s design team with an archive image to inspire them to produce drawings and engineering specifications that would achieve the design intent.
Following detailed discussions to evolve the proposed designs Dernier & Hamlyn’s artisan team handmade a beautiful bespoke pendant light that sits above the dining space which exudes Art Deco glamour while providing practical illumination appropriate to this special space. The pendant is 2300mm long and 600mm wide and contains 22 LED lights. It is fitted with opal panels which cast beguiling interlocking shadows across the ceiling.
Nathan said: “Working with Marala was a true adventure, a voyage of joy. And working with Dernier & Hamlyn to produce one of a kind lighting that accomplishes everything we hoped it would was a labour of love by our team and theirs.”
