Excell Launches New Machine Shop with Penny Mordaunt

Metamex Engineering, the name given to Excell Metal Spinning Ltd.’s new machine shop, was officially launched in Portsmouth on Monday. A Ribbon-Cutting ceremony was held in the morning of the 24th with The Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP invited to officially open the facilities.

Lee Bligh, Director and Co-Founder of Excell Metal Spinning Ltd. Said, “After years of steady planning and with the recent surge in customer demand, the time for expansion is now. We are excited for the opportunities this will bring as we aim to have full control over our processes. This way, we can make the necessary corrections and improvements to the service, which will benefit our customer requirements.

The whole work force here, within the group, have been right behind our plans and have put so much hard work in over the years in order to make this expansion happen, so a huge thank you goes to every one of them. Our customers who have stayed patient with us, especially when our resources have been stretched to the boundaries, again we cannot express how much we appreciate this support. Last but not least the support network of our suppliers, who like most of us have been stretched over recent times but have managed to offer an excellent level of service in order for the expansion to come alive, a Big Thank You to all of them.”

The introduction of a new machine shop is part of a £250,000 package which has introduced four new lathes, including a state-of-the-art laser cutter and has created eight new jobs. The expansion also comes at a pivotal time of the year for Excell who have seen growing demand for their services as businesses look closer to home to source their supplies.

"Excell Metal Spinning is already one of the most successful organisations of its kind in the UK and it is fantastic to see this latest investment" said Stuart Whitehead, Founder of Jefferson. "The Portsmouth-based firm has reshored aspects of its production, created new jobs and, perhaps most importantly, provided opportunities for young people to join the sector via its highly acclaimed apprenticeship programme. At Jefferson and MTD, we have been privileged to share and promote their numerous successes and look forward to doing so for many years to come."

The event will signify yet another major milestone in Excell’s 22 year history, first operating in an ‘out-of-toolbox’ workshop to facilities now scaling 15,000 square feet. Excell is currently home to one of the largest hand spinning departments, and one of the largest fleets of automated metal spinning lathes in the UK.

John Pearce, Made in Britain CEO said, “Excell is a shining example of how to grow a business collaboratively - achieving maximum value from its Made in Britain membership and extracting all the additional value of the Made in Britain mark. Excell brings together the ancient craft of metal spinning with a truly cutting-edge marketing approach – it’s a forward-looking business that truly represents the creativity and resilience of modern British manufacturing. Excell’s expansion is a wonderful new year tonic for the SME and larger manufacturing communities around the UK and for a valued, active member of the Made in Britain community.”
