Government launches Advanced Manufacturing Plan as part of the new Industrial Strategy

The UK government has launched its Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan as part of the broader Industrial Strategy. Made in Britain relays details of this plan to Made in Britain companies, given its direct relevance to large numbers of companies.

The plan sets out a vision for the UK’s advanced manufacturing sector to nearly double annual business investment into the sector from £21 billion to £39 billion by 2035.

It highlights the role of advanced manufacturing in tackling the most important challenges of the day, such as decarbonising and harnessing the potential of AI, with a focus on the role of SME innovators.

It prioritises six frontier industries with greatest growth potential. These are:

• Automotive
• Batteries
• Aerospace
• Space
• Advanced materials
• Agri-tech

The UK government has committed up to £4.3 billion in funding, including up to £2.8 billion in R&D over the next five years, with the aim of anchoring supply chains in the UK.

Specifically, the plan seeks to increase investment through reforms to the business environment such as reducing energy costs, upskilling the workforce and scaling up innovation and automation, as well as investing in regions outside of London and the South East and strengthening collaboration between government and industry.

SME manufacturers will benefit from the expansion of the Made Smarter Adoption programme, which will helps address barrier to technology adoption.
