TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF: TEAM TURNSTYLE'S ENVIRONMENTAL ENDEAVOR AT KENWITH VALLEY NATURE RESERVE
In a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental commitment, Team Turnstyle recently joined a group of dedicated volunteers at Kenwith Valley Nature Reserve. Organized by Torridge District Council, these monthly events draw a diverse crowd, including retirees, students, and local residents, many of whom are regular contributors to the noble cause of preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of their surroundings.
THE MISSION
The mission of the day was clear: to reclaim an area dominated by overgrown scrub and woodland, allowing precious light to filter through and rejuvenate the canopy floor. This initiative not only fosters new plant growth but also creates a more varied habitat for the local wildlife.
Among the enthusiastic volunteers were Jay, Turnstyle’s financial director, and Carrie, the newest addition to the assembly team. Their task for the day involved clearing Hazel trees, an essential aspect of the reserve’s management. Hazel trees are strategically coppiced every five to eight years, ensuring ample time for new growth. The process involves cutting the tree down to produce multiple stems from a single stump, known as a coppice stool. This method not only contributes to the longevity of the trees but also maintains the health of the surrounding ecosystem.
With guidance from Torridge District Council team members, the volunteers got to work work. As the Hazel trees were felled, the wood was then cut into smaller pieces. These valuable resources are then used as beanpoles, pea poles for vegetable patches and also materials for future council-run workshops crafting walking sticks.
"I had a great day with Jay. As a new member of Team Turnstyle, it was wonderful to get to know Jay better and meet so many dedicated volunteers. I loved being part of this project, knowing that our efforts will make a significant impact on the environment and the community." Carrie, Assembly Team, Turnstyle Designs
This collaborative effort not only contributes to the ecological well-being of Kenwith Valley Nature Reserve but also exemplifies the power of community engagement in creating positive change. Team Turnstyle’s involvement serves as a testament to the importance of businesses aligning with local initiatives, fostering a sense of responsibility for the environment and building connections that go beyond the workplace.
