Launch of the world’s first reusable bottle, designed and made in the UK from recycled single-use bottles

Honest, a new ethical brand, today launches a reusable drinking bottle that is manufactured in the UK from locally sourced recycled single-use bottles and is available in eight vibrant colours. To deliver a completely circular product, the Honest Bottle has also been designed so that it can be recycled via household collections, once it reaches its end of life, to be made back into new bottles, again and again.

Growing the availability of environmentally responsible reusable vessels to consumers is seen as a major weapon in reducing single-use plastic bottles. It is estimated that 2.5 billion units of bottled water1 are sold through UK supermarkets each year, equating to more than 34,000 tonnes of single-use plastic. Worse still, as much as 30 per cent of this is imported from overseas, increasing further the negative impact of transport emissions. One particular brand, sold in major supermarkets, astonishingly travels 10,000 miles to reach the UK even though, according to the Drinking Water Inspectorate, UK tap water meets stringent quality standards in over 99 per cent of cases.

Although the numbers of reusable bottles have grown rapidly, not all products can be described as environmentally friendly nor locally made. The Honest Bottle, on the other hand, is the only reusable bottle that is made in Britain from UK-sourced recycled material and which can be recycled in a closed loop system.

The bottle is made from 100 per cent recycled single-use bottles (rPET) and the cap is made entirely from recycled milk bottles (rHDPE). The strap is currently made from both virgin TPU and polycarbonate (PC), for which Honest are actively looking at sourcing a recycled alternative with the required functionality.

Once the Honest Bottle reaches the end of its usable life, it can be easily recycled. The bottle and lid are both fully accepted by household waste collections, whilst Honest will take responsibility for the strap by operating a take back scheme, ensuring that it is then sent in bulk to an appropriate recycling facility.

The lightweight reusable bottle is sleek and stylish, with an ergonomic, instantly recognisable cutting-edge design and is available in eight vibrant colours. As the product was designed in London, the colours are all named after iconic areas of the capital and include; Soho Yellow, Brixton Blue, Camden Pink, Notting Hill Violet, Shoreditch Orange, Hyde Park Green, Kensington Blue and Westminster Grey. Each 500ml Honest Bottle is priced at £14 and available for immediate purchase exclusively at www.honestbottle.com.

The team behind the brand are materials experts and have been a catalyst in driving increased recycling, circularity and reuse throughout the last decade.

“Driving down sales of bottled water must be the number one goal to limit the amount of single-use plastics in circulation”, says Peter Goodwin, co-founder of Honest. “To achieve this, we need a dramatic behavioural change that switches consumers over to reusables; ALL of which need to be at the very least easily recyclable”.

“However, this will only work if consumers can easily refill them”, says Peter. “Unfortunately, public water fountains are sparse in the extreme and people feel uncomfortable asking for their reusable be filled at a restaurant or café even when they have made a purchase", explained Peter.

“To combat this, we are also today launching the Honest Project, which is our initiative to increase accessibility to publicly available drinking water in every country we operate. In achieving this goal, we aim not only to tackle the root cause of our dependency on single-use water bottles, but to also address the human behaviour that results in land and ocean bound litter”, says Peter.

To support these objectives, Honest will dedicate time and resource to install publicly available water refill points, using proceeds from the Honest Bottle sales. It will also campaign for the widespread installation of publicly available water fountains, highlight the quality and cleanliness of publicly available water and reduce barriers to requesting free water in managed premises.
