WITH so many ‘new’ companies being created and applying for Made in Britain membership, it’s nice this month to welcome an ‘old’ company as our new member of the month.
Billingham has been making fabulous bags for photographers and adventure travellers since 1973. Generations of professional photographers haven’t been putting their expensive kit in the bag, they’ve been putting it in “the Billingham”.
The first Billingham came out of the Cradley Heath workshop in 1973 and looked remarkably similar to the bags produced there today. Billingham bags are made out of waterproofed canvas or the even tougher ‘FibreNyte’, leather and brass and they are designed to protect cameras, or whatever else might be safely stashed inside.
The company doesn’t want to be famous among nostalgic photographers for its traditional bags, it wants the world to know that its bags are there to do a job and they do it very well. There is definitely a ‘look’ to a Billingham and earthy or autumnal colours dominate the range of shapes and sizes. The company will even make the bag of your choice in the colour of your choice (from the range) for a small additional fee.
The number of accessories and spares is impressive, too. Although sales and marketing director Harry Billingham would love to sell you a new bag, he’s just as happy taking in your old one for refurbishment. A Billingham is a bag for life and we’re very pleased to introduce the company to the Made in Britain membership.
