Perthcelyn Community Primary School

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is the third largest local authority in Wales. The local authority has used Dextra for many years because of its ability to produce the best lighting solutions for its wide and varied corporate estates, such as schools, throughout the county.

Perthcelyn School is a vibrant, forward-thinking school at the heart of the community, with a strong set of values and professionalism. The school is a member of the global Eco-Schools network. Eco-Schools is the largest global sustainable schools programme – it starts in the classroom and expands to the community by engaging the next generation in action-based learning, producing generation after generation of sustainably minded, environmentally conscious people.

As a result of this, the school is also very aware of the sustainability of its buildings. The main school building was identified as having a low energy rating because old fluorescent T8 and T5 lights were being used. Instead, similar LED solutions were implemented, saving the school ever increasing energy costs.

The Solution

Paul Dukes, Energy Management Officer and Jon Arroyo, Energy Manager were responsible for this project.
The contractor was Fusion Electrical and Building Services Engineering, and the Dextra Brands involved were Dextra Lighting/Dexsor. The architect was Richard Woods.

Design was important in this project as the school is a past winner of the MacEwen Award for Architecture. This is the award that recognises and celebrates ‘architecture for the common good’ Judges are looking to award buildings and places that are demonstrating a clear social purpose, which enhances the lives of people as well as looking good.
This meant Dextra had to utilise the full catalogue for the project and some bespoke options were also used to complete the project. An example of this, was where Capo and Rubix Suspended Bi-Directional products, which had red collars and red bezels, were used to match the school’s colours.

The lighting products used were carefully chosen to meet need to make significant energy savings, which were successfully achieved as a result of Dextra’s work on the project. One of those used, was the AMENITY DECORATIVE HALO LED. One of the newest additions to the range, our new luminaire combines a soft halo effect that emits a backlight onto the mounting surface, with the aesthetic appeal of our standard Dextra Amenity Decorative LED range. This product comes available with a variety of dimming, sensor and emergency options. It is also available in a range of lumen variants (1500, 2000, 3000, or 4000), which highlights its versatility.
One of most popular solutions in the Dextra range-the GRADUATE LED, was also utilised. This product, has been extensively used in schools and hospitals throughout the country. Available in 600mm, 1200mm and 1500mm variants, a wide range of lumen outputs as well as dimming and emergency options the Graduate LED can be tailored for use in applications ranging from classrooms and hospital wards through to corridors and stairwells.

Perfectly fitting in with the need to drive efficiency savings, PLANUM provided a highly efficient solution. PLANUM is a slim line aesthetically attractive, wall mounted, bi directional luminaire, usually ideally suited for reception areas, corridors, stairways and applications where installation of ceiling mounted luminaires is impractical. Offering a 50% up/down light distribution with lensed optics for precise beam control.

The CAPO and RUBIX SUSPENDED BI-DIRECTIONAL lights, which have red Collars and red Bezels, were used to match the school’s colours as well as providing a solution to the carefully selected design on the project.

Combining efficiency with form the CAPO LED provides an architectural solution in suspended applications for both ambient and accent lighting.  The CAPO LED provides a decorative and attractive installation that can also be tailored to suit any corporate theme.

Utilising the same optic design as the recessed and surface family the RUBIX SUSPENDED BI-DIRECTIONAL offers glare compliance to BSEN12464 and UGR19 or below ensuring it can be used in applications such as classrooms.
In any sporting application high quality lighting is critical to ensure a satisfactory player experience. The PROSPORT LED offers a range of distributions and up to 38,584llm luminaire lumens output allowing your scheme to be designed to give optimum light levels and uniformity whilst offering excellent energy efficiency and low maintenance compared to fluorescent and HID sources. Injection moulded polycarbonate end caps and a curved clear polycarbonate diffuser ensures that the luminaire is robust, durable and able to withstand ball strikes from most sports whilst eliminating the risk of shattered lamps.

Other products in this successful project, completed in the summer of 2019, were the BTEC, and the HYDRA and EPK LEDs, helping the school achieve attractive design alongside the energy savings it was looking to make.
