Scottish Water is a statutory corporation that provides water and sewerage services across Scotland. It is accountable to the public through the Scottish Government.
The organisation provides water to over 2.5 million houses and over 150,000 businesses in Scotland, supplying over 1.3 billion litres of drinking water every day. It also takes away 847 million litres of waste water from customers’ properties and treats it before returning it to the environment.
Its Milngavie water treatment works is one of the largest water purification plants in Europe, serving the city of Glasgow with over 1.5 million people.
Recently, in response to the Scottish Government declaring a climate emergency in 2019 and calling for the country to be carbon neutral by 2045, Scottish Water responded to this target by committing to net zero emissions by 2040, a full five years earlier. They recognise they will need to undergo a sweeping transformation during this time to achieve this.
It has worked with a panel of experts, and its stakeholders, to develop a trailblazing routemap, which sets out how they will lead their industry to net zero emissions by 2040 and beyond, and make a greater contribution to Scotland’s overall emissions ambition, including the need for the organisation to become more energy efficient and to embrace low-carbon constructions and use of low-carbon energy products.
With this in mind, lighting efficiency was very much on the agenda when Scottish Water required new offices to be built in Dumfries. Another important requirement was to ensure the lit environment reflected area occupants’ natural circadian rhythm, so products were supplied as tunable white versions.
On this project, Dextra worked with contractor WMQ Building Services and consultants RSP Consulting Engineers.
THE SOLUTION
Dextra products used in the new-build offices included the Runway Continuous Surface/Suspended. This is a slim line aluminium luminaire available in three colour options suitable for surface mounting or suspended installation in continuous runs. The Runway Continuous Surface Suspended provides a seamless appearance that can be infinitely reconfigured to dramatic effect. With an extruded slim line aluminium housing available in grey, black or white options the Runway can be either surface mounted or suspended in continuous runs combined with corner sections, a range of lengths and lumen outputs and with optional bi-directional distribution ensuring that you can create a layout that enhances any space creating an attractive environment for workers or to entice customers.
Also chosen for its versatility, the Protec LED comes with a a selection of attachments allowing the product to be personalised to suit most applications including receptions, offices, retail, corridors, meeting rooms, airports, educational establishments and healthcare. The Protec is available with two reflector options, coloured ring inserts to match corporate themes, drop glass and ring attachments, IP rated covers for bathrooms and wet areas including external under canopy applications and opal or microprism diffuser variants where glare compliance is required. Attachments are easily replaced allowing luminaires to be updated in line with refurbishment avoiding the cost and waste of luminaire replacement.
Elsewhere in the building, the Pro-Light Mini Fixed luminaire was installed. This has been developed to offer clients a comprehensive selection of high quality LED spot lights for a variety of applications. This unique family of products include Fixed, Gimbal, Wallwash and Scoop luminaires that are available in both circular and square formats. The bodies are manufactured from high quality die cast aluminium and come complete with either specular or semi-specular reflectors in a choice of three beam angles.
Also selected for use was the Discalo LED. The Discalo provides an efficient yet decorative wall mounted solution with halo back light for applications ranging from corridors and receptions through to bars and restaurants. With 1500, 2000, 3000 and 4000 lumen output options, blue or white back light halos, integral lithium emergency offering extended lifetime and warranty as well as integral sensor options the Discalo LED is easily tailored to your needs both aesthetically and at a functional level. The integral microwave sensor is available in either on / off or bi level versions and also include wirelessly linked variants to enable luminaires to be grouped for simultaneous operation.
The Ecopak LED was chosen because it offers increased energy efficiency and low maintenance of an LED source giving greater return on investment. With sizes ranging from 600mm to 1800mm and lumen outputs from 2,200 up to 12,000 as well as a range of optic designs including our most popular opal diffuser as well as high rack and ultra high rack for higher mounting heights, the Ecopak can be tailored to suit applications from warehousing and light industry through to circulation and ancillary areas.
This flexibility is further enhanced with a wide range of dimming control gear and integral lithium emergency options. Wireless dimming and control can be offered with our Reacta-Dim system and Reacta-Link options are also available where web based control and reporting of luminaires is required.
Also used on the project was the Hydra LED. This luminaire is an LED IP65 rated weatherproof batten luminaire made from high quality injection moulded GRP.
The Hydra LED can also be offered in a range of dimming variants, white tunable and with integral three hour emergency. We supply the Hydra LED with stainless steel clips and screws as standard in order to ensure that the luminaire has tooled access in compliance with regulations. It is ideally suited to industrial applications where protection from dirt and dust ingress and light impact is essential, especially in areas where access is difficult and the cost of maintaining traditional fluorescent sources is high and is suitable for use in applications where the temperature ranges from -20°C to +25°C.
Finally, the Avalon Wallpack was also installed. This luminaire uses the latest branded LEDs providing excellent efficiency and low energy consumption combined with minimal maintenance. With 2710llm luminaire lumen output the Avalon Wallpack offers an excellent replacement for 70w HID fittings, however with the added benefit of significantly reduced energy consumption. The Avalon Wallpack is also available with optional integral photocell ensuring dusk to dawn operation, integral microwave sensors for presence detection, optional integral lithium emergency and wireless connectivity for use with our Reacta-Link Wireless system.
