Show us your dog! Plus other foreign language video call phrases to wow colleagues

HOW often do you hear the phrase ‘Can you hear me’ on video calls? And do you know how to say that phrase when chatting to European colleagues?

The language experts at Busuu have looked at the phrases used frequently on video calls, from ‘No sorry, after you’ to ‘Can you repeat that please?’.

They’ve translated them into European languages to help those talking to colleagues overseas or for those in the UK who simply want to impress their workmates.

Video conferencing has become a way of life globally over the last 18 months, and with so many people now used to connecting daily with colleagues online, this trend shows no signs of slowing down.

Some phrases are as a result of poor internet connection, while others can be to help calls with big groups run smoothly, like ‘If you’re not speaking, can you turn your mic off?’ and ‘Next slide please’.

And then there are the phrases used as an ice-breaker, including ‘Show us your dog’.

Christiane Bark, head of localisation at Busuu, said: "Who would have thought 18 months ago that video calls would become a part of everyone's normal working day? Well as a result people all over the world are using phrases like 'Can you see my screen?' every day.

"'Sorry guys, I was on mute' is a personal favourite - you can't get through a call without saying it at least once!

"These are great for those who would like to wow their colleagues with a little French, German or Italian on their next video call."
