Steel box section or angle steel? Your guide to buying strong, sturdy & tough stillages

Since 1988, MC&P has grown to be the UK’s leading supplier of heavy-duty storage, loading and logistics products, including metal stillages, post pallets, lockable stillages, bulk bag holders and more, all built with strong mild steel.

We use steel box section in all of our products, but we know other manufacturers’ products out there use angle steel.

Not sure what the difference is between steel box section and angle steel? Need help to make sure you’re choosing the right stillage for your organisation? Read on for our handy guide to buying strong, sturdy and tough stillages that are built to last.

What is Steel Box Section?

Square steel box section is used to manufacture the frame of products such as Metal Stillages, A Frame Stillages, Post Pallets, Crane Lift Stillages, Gas Bottle Stillages and other handling materials, creating strong, reinforced storage and logistics systems. Steel Box Section products are tough, longer-lasting and used by organisations spanning countless sectors worldwide who are looking for durability, efficiency and reliability when storing, handling and transporting goods.

What is Angle Steel?

Angle steel, also known as angle iron, is a type of steel that has an L-shaped cross-section. It is formed by bending a piece of steel at a 90-degree angle, resulting in two legs of equal or unequal length. Welded for support, Angle Steel can be used in construction, manufacturing, and engineering for framing, bracing, supports, and framework etc.

What is the difference between Steel Box Section vs Angle Steel?

Steel Box Section offers superior strength through its rigidity due to the square-shaped construction, giving organisations in manufacturing, construction, logistics and steelwork – amongst many others – a more durable, heavy-duty product to store and handle goods. Angle Steel has limitations with structural integrity due to its open shape, meaning there’s a higher risk of damage during handling and transportation and therefore making angle steel a less reliable option.

Need more storage space in your warehouse? Or need to transport a lot of products at once? Then steel box section products are your go-to! Most products built with box section steel by MC&P operate with a 1000KG Safe Working Load and are stackable up to 4 units high, providing your workplace with extra storage space and great capacity to handle, store and move higher quantities of heavy-duty products.

Products manufactured with Angle Steel are more likely to bend or buckle under heavy loads due to less reinforcement in their joints.

Why choose Steel Box Section instead of Angle Steel stillages?

  • Strength - Steel Box Section is at least 100% stronger vs Angle Steel.
  • Stacking - Due to the additional strength that Box Section offers, stillages can be reliably and safely stacked even when loaded to their maximum SWL.
  • Reliability & Longevity - Our stillages are designed and manufactured to be abused! They can withstand heavy knocks without causing any loss of strength. Angle steel can be easily damaged which can potentially reduce the safe working load of the stillage.
  • Cost & Value - Steel box is more expensive to buy vs angle steel but we will not sacrifice the quality and safety of our stillages by manufacturing using angle. Despite being more expensive to use, our stillages are still more competitively priced than the majority of our competitors!
