The award-winning Black Country Living Museum is one of the UK’s most remarkable open-air museums. It transports visitors back in time, engaging all senses with the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the past.
Visitors can explore original period shops and houses, interacting with costumed characters along the way. A new area of the museum features two semi-detached council houses built in the Brewery Fields Estate in Dudley in 1925. The 1940 house showcases everyday life in wartime Dudley, while the 1968 house offers a glimpse into the life of a family from that era.
Cast iron toilet cisterns were popular in the 1940s for their durability and reliability. To enhance the authenticity of the houses, two Thomas Dudley Dauntless Cascade high-level cast iron cisterns were donated to the museum. These cisterns were manufactured right in the heart of the Black Country, at the Dudley Foundry, which continues to produce castings today.
The Thomas Dudley Foundry paved the way for the company’s plastics manufacturing plant in the 1950s, as advancements in technology and plumbing standards led to the need for more cost-effective and corrosion-resistant materials.
Visit the Black Country Living Museum to experience life in 1940 and 1968 and see our cast iron cisterns.
