UK government seeks input on tariffs in response to US trade measures

Made in Britain extends the UK government’s invitation for views from UK businesses on how the proposed UK tariff measures, in response to new US tariffs, could impact their operations. This Request for Input, launched by the Department for Business and Trade, is a formal step that ensures UK businesses can shape any future response.

Deadline to respond: 11:59pm, Wednesday 1 May 2025

What has changed?

On 2 April 2025, the US government announced that it will impose an additional 10% tariff on UK imports, applied on top of all existing US duties, taxes and fees. This new tariff comes into force on 5 April 2025 at 00:01 EST.

The new 10% tariff does not apply to certain categories of UK goods exported to the US, which remain subject to separate or existing duties. These include:

  • Steel, aluminium products, automobiles and automobile parts (already subject to 25% tariffs)
  • Copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber
  • Energy, energy products, and other minerals not available in the US

Why it matters:

The UK government wants to understand how potential UK tariff measures might affect UK businesses. This includes input on:

  • The likely impact of potential UK tariffs on specific goods;
  • The sectors most likely to be affected;
  • Any unintended consequences or supply chain implications;
  • Suggestions for how the UK government could reduce disruption if tariffs are applied.

Your insights will help the UK government assess the scope and consequences of any potential UK tariff response. An indicative long list of US products that could be considered for UK tariffs has also been published to help businesses understand and respond more effectively.

How to respond:

Made in Britain encourages all Made in Britain companies who export, or are otherwise affected by US-UK trade relations to consider submitting evidence. Your input could help shape the UK’s response and ensure manufacturers are represented.
