LAUREL UNIT - CALLINGTON ROAD HOSPITAL

Callington Road Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Bristol, England. Opened in 2006, it provides psychiatric inpatient and community services for Bristol and the surrounding region. It is run by the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. On this project the client was Rydon, the hospital’s facilities management company, and the contractor, Oldland Electrical who Dextra Lighting were working with for the first time. The hospital wanted an LED upgrade in its Laurel Unit as part of an overall ward refurbishment programme.

The main solution used on the project by Dextra included AMENITY DECORATIVE SECURE which is a well-used and proven product in the healthcare sector. For its compatibility, it was put through many vigorous tests by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership to make sure it was anti ligature. It withstood all tests, unlike its competitors and is also cost-effective. As a result, 140 units were supplied and used in all rooms in the ward. Night lights were added in patient bedrooms.

The AMENITY DECORATIVE SECURE has also been tested and certified to comply with the requirements of the Department of Health Environmental Design Guide, Adult Medium Secure Services, for use in secure applications where care must be taken to ensure that vulnerable patients are at minimal risk of harm. While safety and security are of the utmost concern, creating a pleasant environment for patients to aid recovery is also key with any luminaire designed for mental health applications. The AMENITY DECORATIVE SECURE is available in a range of lumen outputs and dimming variants ensuring that rooms can be lit to the required levels, as well as offering optional integral emergency control gear when needed.
With a steel housing and 3.5mm polycarbonate diffuser, the AMENITY DECORATIVE SECURE has been specifically designed to ensure that the load from any impact is spread through the housing, ensuring that the luminaire can withstand sustained abuse without exposing sharp edges or ligature points, giving it an IK10 rating. When installed with anti-pick mastic to seal the luminaire to the mounting surface the Amenity Decorative Secure complies with ligature resistant requirements and is also rated to IP65 when sealed to the mounting surface.

Dexreco, the in-house recycling division of Dextra Group were also involved in this project, ensuring that all the old light fittings were disposed of quickly and efficiently in accordance with WEEE regulations. By transporting the old luminaires using Dextra’s liveried fleet of vehicles and implementing Dexreco’s smart “back load” process, the carbon pollution caused by the transportation and disposal of luminaires was able to be drastically reduced.
