Magma Group was one of 226 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise announced in April 2022. Magma was recognised for its excellence in Innovation.
The company is a leading manufacturer and supplier of a wide range of refractory, ceramic and catalyst materials and technology worldwide. Their mission is to grow and develop the business through ongoing innovation, research and development in order to offer an increased product range.
Building on their strength of 40 years’ experience in the Ceramics industry, Dewsbury based Magma Catalysts designs their own catalyst carrier. Their product is unlike other Catalyst products and looks different, it is spherical with a textured “Golf Ball” like surface.
Noticing a lack of innovation in the SMR catalyst market over the last 20 years and the need for more hydrogen in the world, a gap in the market was identified for a new catalyst that could improve hydrogen production and lower energy costs.
Mark Stuckey, Managing Director of Magma Group, answered some questions on the importance of winning the Queens Award to the business.
How was your company able to achieve the award?
Firstly, we focused on understanding our core strength in a wide range or ceramic manufacturing materials and methods and reviewed the current products in our target market sector (Catalysis).
We observed the process limitations of our competitors’ products and looked at how we could improve upon them and develop a new enhanced catalyst product to launch to market.
This involved investing in the design and build of a new innovative manufacturing process, which was successful in delivering the expected improvements in catalyst optimisation and efficiency.
What will winning mean to the business?
For the last 12 years, Magma has enjoyed continual and significant growth. Most recently with the acquisitions of P&E in Huddersfield and merger with UNICAT. The company has four main areas of business Catalysts, Ceramics, Combustion, Electrical Control Panels at P&E and operates worldwide from its facilities in the UK (Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Bolton and The Wirral), Vietnam and the US.
Over the years we have been expanding and growing the business and coming up with innovative new ideas to develop our Catalyst product, and it is great that our hard work and dedication has been recognised.
The award will shine a light on the innovation and our strategy of customer centric technical investment.
We strongly believe that by investing to improve our customers processes we will facilitate increased sales and our ability to invest more in innovation.
What are your future plans?
We are committed to growth as our focus and believe innovation is the best enabler for this.
So, the research development and deployment of an innovation pipeline is central to our future growth plan.
Mark added; “We are honoured to have been recognised for the Queens Award for Enterprise for Innovation this year.
