MOSS BURY PRIMARY SCHOOL - Hertfordshire

Moss Bury Primary School and Nursery is a one-form entry school catering for children aged 3-11 years including a part time nursery. The school is situated near central Stevenage with extensive grounds and an impressive outdoor environment.

It is one of only two schools in Hertfordshire with its very own unit for children with hearing impairments. The school is seen as a place where positive lifelong habits, that will have lasting benefit and impact, are instilled in a supportive and friendly environment.

Working with consultant Brontide Consulting and contractor T Clarke East, Dextra was asked to help with the recent school lighting upgrade project which included the replacement of several asbestos roof areas at the same time.

THE SOLUTION
Dextra’s popular Graduate LED was chosen for use in the corridors and classrooms, where 195 were installed. The Graduate has been extensively used in academia and healthcare applications nationwide. Available in four lengths ranging from 600mm to 1800mm, a wide range of lumen outputs as well as dimming and lithium emergency options the Graduate can be tailored for use in applications ranging from classrooms and hospital wards through to circulation and ancillary areas. With a steel housing, polycarbonate diffuser and screw retained injection moulded end caps, long life drivers and LEDs with a lifetime of L90 to 60,000 operating hours the Graduate is designed to offer excellent service life and reliability with minimal maintenance.

Also used in the classrooms was the MOD Edge UGR, with 93 fitted. Dextra’s MOD Edge UGR is a traditional flat panel luminaire with a microprism diffuser offering glare compliance to BSEN 12646 in all lumen outputs ensuring its suitability for use in applications such as offices and academia. The MOD UGR uses backlit technology ensuring superb efficiency as well as benefitting LED lifetime by using a high chip count run at low output to minimise operating temperature. The MOD UGR is available in a wide range of sizes and lumen outputs, as well as lay in and pull up variants to suit all common ceiling types.

In the stores and toilets, 128 Amenity Decorative LED’s were installed with R25E sensors. The Amenity Decorative is one of Dextra’s most popular LED luminaries and offers an attractive solution for amenity applications such as corridors and stairwells and is manufactured from robust injection moulded polycarbonate to ensure it can withstand light accidental impact that can occur in such applications. This flexible range is available in 1500, 2000, 3000 and 4000 lumen outputs, as well a range of dimming and integral lithium emergency variants.

Also used in the store rooms was the Typhon, where 11 were installed with R25E sensors. The Typhon is a robust and durable IP65 luminaire suitable for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications where protection against water and dust ingress and light impact is critical.

Manufactured with a glass reinforced polyester housing and supplied with stainless steel clips as standard, the Typhon offers excellent chemical resistance, whilst the polycarbonate diffuser ensures resilience against accidental impacts. The Typhon is supplied complete with snap on mounting clips for the luminaire rear providing both suspension and surface mounting points without the need to drill the luminaire housing, whilst the gear tray is mounted via spring release clips ensuring installation and ongoing maintenance can be undertaken quickly and simply.

Also installed were 28 Ecopak LEDs. The Ecopak offers increased energy efficiency and low maintenance of an LED source giving greater return on investment. Sizes range from 600mm to 1800mm and lumen outputs from 2,200 up to 12,000. Available in a range of optic designs, including our most popular opal diffuser as well as high rack and ultra-high rack for higher mounting heights, the Ecopak can be tailored to suit applications from warehousing and light industry through to circulation and ancillary areas.

To help support the need for efficient and effective lighting on the external of the school building, Dextra also supplied 18 Avalon Wallpack LED’s. With a 2710 l/lm output the Avalon Wallpack offers an excellent replacement for 70w HID fittings, however with the added benefit of significantly reduced energy consumption. The Avalon Wallpack is also available with optional integral photocell ensuring dusk to dawn operation, integral microwave sensors for presence detection, optional integral lithium emergency and wireless connectivity for use with our Reacta-Link Wireless system.

To highlight the exits in the school, Dextra’s EXI2 LED was provided, with 40 installed throughout the building. The EXI2 LED is a slim line polycarbonate emergency exit sign supplied with prewired cable suitable for surface mounting and rear cable entry and is available in both standard and Self test variants. All EXI2 LED legends are compliant with the safety signs directive 92/58/EEC, other sign formats can be provided on request.

Alongside this, 10 AME LED IP65 Self-Contained Polycarbonate bulkheads were installed. In the kitchen, Dextra also supplied 9 IP rated 600×600 LED panels.
