UnPacked with Richard Potts, Bowman Stor

“It’s not about making things cheaply. It’s about making things properly, with quality you can be proud of.”
Richard Potts, Bowman Stor

Richard’s journey in manufacturing began on the shop floor, making tea and learning the machines. Over time, he moved into sales, and in 2016 seized the chance to buy Bowman Stor, a Walsall-based company producing industrial filters. Since then, he’s doubled turnover, expanded exports to 92% of production, and built a reputation for British-made quality.

At the heart of Bowman Stor is innovation: their patented filter media is made from recycled glass bottles, turning waste into sustainable, world-class products. With six global patents and a growing customer base from North America to China, the business proves that small UK firms can compete on the international stage.

Richard stresses the importance of making products in Britain, supporting local jobs, and reinvesting in the community, from sponsoring football teams to training the next generation of manufacturers. For him, the “Made in Britain” trademark isn’t just a badge; it’s a promise of quality and integrity.

As Richard puts it, “If you believe, keep going. Follow your dreams. Enjoy the ride. And put that Made in Britain trademark on everything. People will buy it, because they know it’s quality.”
