SUMMIT UP - Oldham

Summit Up, Oldham’s new climbing centre, opened in 2021 providing wall climbing and other similar activities for all ages and abilities.

Summit Up is built on an ethos of creating a centre that can engage the whole family and provide a first class experience, as well as leaving a lasting legacy on the local community.

The company is the trading subsidiary of The Stoller Charitable Trust, whose purpose has been to provide opportunities to raise aspirations, support Oldham’s young people to reach the height of their ability and to provide a helping hand when it is most needed. All of Summit Up’s profits will go directly to supporting charity.

THE SOLUTION

On this project Dextra worked with Summit Up Climbing, Electrical contractor Chris Bowker Ltd and Electrical consultant JJLC Engineering Design Services, who is a long-term supporter of Dextra, using them across several healthcare and industrial projects. This project was unique, in terms of climbing walls and equipment located throughout, making it a challenge to achieve light levels whilst also being aware of the impact glare on the walls and other equipment would have on climbers.

Chosen for its efficiency and aesthetics, 50 Protec LED’s were installed in the WCs and circulation areas of the centre. These were supplied as standard three-hour emergency versions.

In the building’s plant room, 12 of Dextra’s Typhon LED’s were installed. The Typhon offers a robust and durable IP65 luminaire suitable for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications where protection against water and dust ingress and light impact is critical.
To aid ceiling compatibility and efficiency requirements in the building, the Modled Slim was chosen for use in the breakout areas. Supplied as three-hour standard emergency versions, 14 Modled Slim’s were installed in total.

Also supplied to support this was the Modeled SLIM UGR, with 45 installed in the office areas. The Dextra MODLED Slim UGR provides a minimalist flat panel appearance with a homogenous lit diffuser, the highly efficient back lit design gives superior energy efficiency and LED lifetime whilst the microprism panel ensures compliance with UGR 19 and BSEN 12464 glare criteria in all lumen outputs and room sizes.

Dextra’s popular Graduate LED was also used around the building. The Graduate LED is suitable for installation on conduit, surface mounting or suspension and can be offered with integral microwave sensors for additional energy savings.

In the café, to help provide a relaxing, casual feel, the Capo LED was used. Six were installed here and in the breakout areas.

For a stylish ‘architectural feel’ in the main entrance, 15 Halobay Opal luminaire’s were installed. This product offers a highly efficient yet architecturally pleasing solution for medium to high level installations in a wide range of retail and commercial applications. With a spun aluminium housing and dished high transmission opal diffuser the Halobay creates an attractive luminous halo providing excellent light levels and uniformity without compromising the aesthetic of your installation.
Considered one of the most important fittings on the project, because it was utilised at its full height of 20m, 32 of Dextra’s Tracer LED Lowbay 2’s were supplied for the main climbing and speed wall areas. The Tracer LED Lowbay 2 introduces a cost effective and attractive slimline LED solution for high level applications to the Dextra Lighting range.

With design emphasis on minimal cost of ownership the Tracer LED Lowbay 2 is available in three lumen outputs to allow effective replacement for a range of HID luminaires up to 400w, allowing their installation on a one for one basis eliminating the need to modify wiring and minimising installation time. This low cost installation is combined with highly efficient optical design ensuring that a typical installation will provide energy savings of approximately 45% compared to HID luminaires.
