As Sunswap’s engineering team enter the pre-production phase, we’re excited to show off the technical elements of Endurance’s new outer shell. The casing is made from highly optimised material and includes a unique service hatch, while also incorporating Sunswap’s renewed branding. These 3 key developments are outlined in more detail below:
1. A switch from metal to plastic: Upgrading to high-quality plastic covers was of high importance, especially considering the weight reduction compared to having a metal shell. It’s part of the weight efficiency that allows Sunswap to match or reduce weight compared to competitors. The new panels are made from vacuum-formed plastic, best shaped to suit the technology inside and the new service hatch. They were designed by our team in close collaboration with APH3G group – one our many UK-based suppliers – who have experience ranging from aircraft interiors to sports cars, including making parts for the shuttle trains at London’s Heathrow Airport.
2. The compact access hatch: A smaller service hatch is all that’s needed on Endurance, compared to a diesel-fuelled Transport Refrigeration Unit (TRU) or hybrid TRU that typically has large doors. This compact feature is thanks to Endurance’s reliability; as much less can go wrong with our electric system, and less space is needed to perform maintenance. Compared to a combustion engine there are fewer moving parts – not to mention no soot or engine oil accumulation. As part of our aftermarket service offering, all planned maintenance can occur via the service hatch, with rare cases of major unplanned repair involving panel removal.
3. An iconic grill: The opportunity to display some artistic flair on the grill was not missed: A lightning bolt design helps mark our e-TRU out as electric to passers-by and logistics operators, using our brand iconography rolled out at the start of 2023. Considering how much time a TRU spends tucked away behind a tractor unit, it’s important to be as striking as possible!
Sunswap’s team have worked extensively to develop a product that fits the same tried and trusted dimensions of a transport refrigeration unit made for an articulated trailer, whilst still breaking the mould in terms of the sophisticated tech within. This technological journey has led to an integrated e-TRU and solar-topped reefer system that can fulfil the same delivery cycles as a diesel fridge, while also decarbonising the cold chain and reducing operational cost.
