TERMINAL 2 VIP LOUNGE - Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport is the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of passenger numbers and the busiest of those not serving London.

The airport comprises of three passenger terminals and a private terminal and is the only airport in the UK other than Heathrow Airport to operate two full length runways. Manchester Airport covers an area of 1,400 acres. Officially opened on 25 June 1938, it was initially known as Ringway Airport In World War II, as RAF Ringway, it was a base for the Royal Air Force.

In 2015, the airport announced a £1bn project known as the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MANTP), which encompassed an expansion of Terminal Two and a reconfiguration of the airfield, with a view to increasing the terminal’s capacity by 150 per cent. The new-look terminal was officially opened to passengers in July 2021, providing Manchester Airport with a flagship, world-class facility. It boasts a light and airy check-in hall, a state-of-the-art 10-lane security area designed to increase efficiency of checks, and a wide range of new shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, including many brands born and bred in the North.

In recent years Dextra have been directly involved in a number of VIP lounges throughout the airport, including 1903 in Terminal 3 and the prestigious PremiAir private terminal. These have been highly successful since their opening.

As part of the Transformation Programme, two new lounges have been added to Terminal Two, including a VIP Lounge trading under the airport’s 1903 brand. Working with airport M&E consultant Jacobs, and electrical contractor DL Electrical, Dextra Group was chosen to supply lighting for the new terminal VIP lounge. It was important that all luminaries supplied had to meet the airport’s high efficiency specifications. Also, the ceilings in the lounge had acoustic rafts that Dextra had to factor into its design and work around.

THE SOLUTION

An example of this was use of the Velouté which was used in main lounge areas where 260 were supplied. As the luminaire is track mounted, it could be hidden in the acoustic rafts in a subtle way.

Available in a wide range of lumen outputs and colour temperatures, the Velouté range of track mounted spot lights are manufactured from die cast aluminium and designed with rounded edges and concealed fixings this beautifully sculpted product effortlessly blends with its surroundings. All Velouté luminaires are supplied with a three-circuit adaptor with a rotary dial for circuit selection and to allow individual luminaires to be switched on and off. All luminaires can also be rotated and pivoted allowing for lighting displays to be quickly and simply adjusted to suit with minimal expense and time.
Used in a similar way, the other track-mounted luminaire Coulis Maxi was also installed in the main lounge areas, with 150 supplied. The Coulis Maxi has been designed to offer a simple yet effective solution for lighting displays, manufactured from die cast aluminium the classic tubular design of the head is evocative of a bygone era, whilst the pin stripe detailing and deep-set black reflector bezel offer a contemporary feel. The mounting arm comes with a unique annotated dial allowing you to rotate the fitting head to the exact angle required, ensuring that they can be positioned precisely and with minimal effort along the length of the track.

To illuminate above the food and alcohol stands, helping provide sufficient levels, 20 Protec LED were supplied. A high quality recessed LED downlight, the Protec LED uses the highest quality components with cutting edge optic design and a modern aesthetic. IP65 can be achieved for use in bathrooms and wet areas. This premium LED variant offers lumen output packages up to 3000lm making it suitable as a primary light source for high end specifications, such as receptions, offices, retail, corridors, meeting rooms, airports and educational establishments. With impressive energy cost savings (with short capital cost payback periods) over its fluorescent equivalents, it is an ideal option to tie in with environmental management policies, requiring a commitment to energy reduction. The Protec LED comes with a number of bezel, reflector, beam angle and colour attachment options and once installed, reflectors and colour attachments can be easily removed and replaced.
In the entrance to the lounge, to help highlight and ‘wall-wash’ the entrance walls, the Runway Continuous Surface/Suspended was supplied, with 20 installed. This luminaire has a slim line aluminium housing and is offered in either surface mounted or suspended options and in either continuous runs or as individual luminaires.

Offering the versatility to be surface mounted or suspended, in continuous runs combined with corner sections, a range of lengths and lumen outputs and optional bidirectional distribution ensures lighting designers can configure the perfect layout, creating an attractive environment for workers or potential customers.

This flexibility is further enhanced with integral emergency, white tunable and dimming options along with two optic styles, a minimalist opal finish or microprism for compliance with the 3000 candela requirements of BSEN12464 for use in office and school areas (L22, L14 and L29 variants only). The Runway also incorporates the latest mid power LEDs ensuring optimal energy efficiency with minimal need for maintenance over the course of its lifetime.

Also, part of the Runway family, 20 Runway Continuous Recessed were used to provide a recessed yet architectural feel to the WC areas. This luminaire is useful where lighting must fulfil both architectural and practical purposes. The Recessed Runway provides a seamless appearance that can be infinitely reconfigured to dramatic effect. The slim line aluminium housing, available in three colour options, a range of lengths and various lumen outputs, can be recessed in continuous runs or combined with corner sections to create the ideal layout.
To satisfy the emergency lighting requirements, Dextra supplied the HBE LED 4w LED self-contained surface ‘Hanging Blade’ Exit Sign with aluminium body and screen-printed legends.

Also, for the same use the OEZ2 LED was installed alongside the LED4. The LED4 incorporates a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery giving greatly extended lifetime over traditional Nickel Cadmium and Nickel Metal Hydride products.  Designed to complement mains operated luminaires, the LED4 is a standalone non maintained emergency luminaire and is available in standard, self-test and autotest emergency variants. All luminaires are supplied complete with a range of easily changed lenses for open area, escape route and spot applications ensuring that a single luminaire can be installed across any project and the lenses changed as and when required to provide the required light distribution.
