We have seen so many stories this year of businesses that have thrived, despite the continuing difficult market conditions, in particular in relation to sustainability.
One such company that has embraced the Made in Britain Green Growth Assessment is Magus Electronics, who is a subcontract manufacturer based in Wheelock, Cheshire. The firm has over 35 years of experience specialising in all aspects of PCB assembly, product design and electro-mechanical product assembly.
In this article, we talk to Magus Electronics' HR & Business Support Manager, Kirsty Wilkinson-Shaw, who told us about the company's sustainability journey so far and the value of the Green Growth programme.
Why has the Green Growth Programme been so valuable?
We’ve noticed a huge shift in organisations we work with, who are actively looking to improve and promote sustainability and their environmental impact. Some of the common themes have been to reduce their carbon footprint by trading with local businesses, so straight away we are receiving greater enquiries for local manufacturing projects. As a company, we have always strived to reduce waste, which has seen cost savings in areas such as packing and distribution. We are pleased to be able to demonstrate our commitment and responsibility to sustainability through our Made in Britain membership.
How has it helped transform your business?
For us, there have been two main outcomes. The first is greater energy efficiency, through our re-fit of LED energy-efficient lighting. This has also improved visibility in our manufacturing division, a must when the team are working with fine surface mount components. Another factor is recycling; we have long been an advocate for efforts to reuse cardboard packaging. Over 90% of our packaging sent to customers is recycled, and we reuse everything from cardboard packaging, paper packers, and even bubble wrap. Even scrap PCBs and components are saved to use for training and upskilling operators.
What do you see as the benefit of the Green Growth Programme?
We'd say the biggest benefit is encouraging manufacturers to become more environmentally focused. The programme works alongside Made in Britain membership, it’s all part of the ‘trade local’ message, strengthening trade and collaboration within the UK and reducing carbon footprints when exporting internationally.
In what way will other members benefit?
Stronger collaboration with other organisations working towards green programmes, a positive image for environmental sustainability, as well as potential cost savings to the business. The Green Growth assessment is also great for helping members identify further areas for improvement.
